Will half an amp be enough for my server? PDF Print E-mail

A1isp provides half an amp (0.5A) with all its colocation packages as standard. Should your server require more power, then more is available at additional cost.

Your server may have a power supply rated at 300-500W. This rating does not mean that your server will draw this level of current on a continuous level. Manufacturers use the same power supply across a range of machines, all of which may have different specifications, processors, hard drives etc.

Another major influence on power usage is the load on the processor and the type of tasks the server is doing. For most web hosting and mail serving activities, where the overall processor loading is not that high, the processor will only be runnning at a small percentage of its overall capacity. However, if you are running very intensive tasks like media streaming or number crunching then you will see a higher power consumption of the server.

As an example, the nonredundant power supply provided with a Dell PowerEdge R200 is rated at 345W; at 230V this is a maximum of 1.5A. Most of our customers who colocate R200s require only 0.5A.

For redundant power supplies the load is generally balanced across both supplies, usually with a slight increase in consumption.

We measure all server consumption on a continuous basis and have access to many tools and past data to aid us in estimating the capacity of any server with any specification. Is your current server host estimating your power consumption correctly? You could be paying unnecessary power costs!
