| Why should we colocate our servers? |

There are a number of reasons why you should consider colocation, instead of operating your servers from your office.
Network EnvironmentA typical small office will use an ADSL line for internet access. Although the speeds achievable with ADSL2 are impressive, the upload speed is often much lower than the download speed. While it might be acceptable to start with, the bandwidth won't be enough to support multiple users. This means that once your online business starts to grow, your visitors will experience a real reduction in in performance. VOIP lines will experience delays too, and your office users will find it hard to send emails and browse the web. The Service Level Agreement (SLA) available on your ADSL line may also be quite loose, and your line is very prone to disruption by external factors such as exchange works and cabling faults. Larger office connections on leased lines may be affected by high bandwidth costs, firewalls and small IP ranges. The network at our datacentres uses symmetric, redundant, gigabit backbones and direct links to peering points such as LINX, ensuring maximum performance, backed by a solid SLA. FacilitiesSmall offices generally don't have much space to fit large racks and the associated cabling. Usually a spare cupboard or small storeroom is used for this purpose. Due to the heat given off by servers, air conditioning is necessary all year around - and the costs associated with installation and servicing can be prohibitive. Should a spell of hot weather overload the capacity of your cooling system, or you have a fault with your air conditioning, servers will overheat and crash, and hard drives could fail. Datacentres have multiple air conditioning units ensuring low temperatures all year around. ElectricityRunning servers and air conditioning can be an unpredictable cost to your business, and the effects of power failures in your street or town can be dramatic. Commercial-grade UPSs require expensive batteries and can only provide power for a limited time to shutdown servers in the event of an outage. A datacentre has multiple power sources; in the event of a mains failure, a UPS takes over while diesel-powered generators start up. These generators are able to run indefinitely, ensuring service even during the most severe regional failures. SecurityA rack of servers can soon add up to an eye-watering cost, and provide a very tempting target for thieves. Add to this the requirement to allow staff and external techicians out-of-hours access, and you could be creating a real insurance and security nightmare for your company. Datacentre security staff are onsite 24/7, and ensure strict pre-booking security arrangements are followed. They prevent removal of equipment without permission and will never allow persons onto the datafloor without photographic ID being retained.
RiskOur datacentres have spent 7 figure sums on their facilities; we can utilise this space for your colocated server and give you maximum peace of mind. Our fixed price colocation packages mean no surprise bills, no cost of setting up a server room, and a fixed SLA which means you don't have to worry. |
